User Help for the Pavement Preservation Treatment Construction Guide

This Help section describes the basic features and navigation of the online Pavement Preservation Treatment Construction Guide.

1.0 Basic Features

The following list outlines the basic features of the Pavement Preservation Treatment Construction Guide. Click on any of the links to jump to that section of the Help page.

Main Menu

Lists all of the chapters in the guide. Access any chapter by selecting the chapter from the list. You can access the Main Menu at any time by selecting the Main Menu link at the top of the lefthand navigation. The Main Menu is shown below:

Chapter Menu

When each chapter opens, the chapter title appears at the top of the screen.  At the left of the screen is a list of chapter sections.  Select any section title to open a list of chapter subsections.  Select a subsection title to go directly to that part of the Online Guide.  Otherwise, use the vertical scroll bar at the right to scroll through the content.

These five section titles appear below the content list in every chapter when appropriate: 

  • Checklists
  • Troubleshooting
  • References
  • Media
  • View CALTRANS Practices*

(* Information specific to California Department of Transportation, chapters 4-11 only.) 

Select any of those titles to go to that section.  Return to the Main Menu from any screen by selecting Main Menu at the upper left. The sections are described below:

Checklists

Checklists are tables of suggested field considerations that can assist in the sucessfull completion of a project. These tables bring attention to important aspects and componentes of the project process.

Troubleshooting

This section, where available, provides information to assist field personnel in troubleshooting problems related to a particular topic.

References

Lists of original sources of information.

Media

For a quick overview of all of the media assets for a chapter, select the Media button. The Media page for each chapter has thumbnails of each image or animation used in that chapter. Selecting the link below the thumbnail will open the appropriate chapter to the place where media asset is inserted.

View CALTRANS Practices

Several chapters in the guide have content that is CALTRANS (California Department of Transportation) specific. This content is normally hidden. To view CALTRANS content, select the View CALTRANS Practices button. Any content on the page that is CALTRANS specific will be revealed and highlighted in yellow. To hide the CALTRANS content, select the View CALTRANS Practices button again. For chapters that do not have CALTRANS content, the View CALTRANS Practices button will be greyed out and unselectable.

Credits/Technical Requirements

The link for Credits/Technical Requirements is located in the left-hand navigation on the Main Menu screen. The Credits section lists the organizations that contributed to the Online Guide content. The Technical Requirements section lists the hardware, software, and other requirements for using the Online Guide.

Back

The Back button is located above the left-hand navigation on every content screen. Selecting the Back button will take the user back to the last page visited in the online guide. The Back button is shown below:

Printer Friendly

Selecting the Printer Friendly button will open a copy of the page you are currently on in a format that will print correctly on 8.5 X 11 inch paper. The icon is located just below the header on the right side of the page and looks like this:

To print the new page select the print icon Browser print page icon from the browser toolbar.

Site Tools

The Online Guide has a set of common Site Tools that appear at the top right of every page. These tools are shown below:

The tools include:

  • Search
  • Glossary
  • Site Map
  • Help

Search

Allows the user to find a specific word or phrase in the guide. Enter text in the Search field and select Search.  The screen will display a list of subsections in which the specific word or phrase appears. (This function may take several moments to load, especially on slower dial-up connections.) The Search page appears below:

Glossary

Displays an alphabetical list of terms used in the Online Guide and their definitions.  Use the vertical scroll bar at the right to scroll down the list.

Site Map

Provides an index of the Online Guide contents and serves as an alternate means of accessing content.  Select a link in the Site Map to go directly to a particular section of the Online Guide.  Otherwise, use the Main Menu.

Help

The Help button links to this page. It's purpose is to orient new users to the navigation and organization of the Online Guide.

 

2.0 How to Use the Online Guide

To access Online Guide chapters

Go to the Main Menu from any screen by selecting Main Menu from the left-hand menu.  From the Main Menu, select the chapter name.  Select chapters in any order.

To access chapter content

Within each chapter, titles of chapter sections are listed on a menu at the left of the screen.  Select the section title to display the topic’s subsection titles.  To access a specific subsection, select the subsection title.  Select subsections in any order.

Chapters are organized similarly, with the following information at the left of each screen:

  • Chapter Content: (Introduction, Project Selection, Design & Specification, Construction)
  • Checklist:  Lists field considerations for the particular pavement conservation treatment in a checklist format.
  • Troubleshooting: Describes common pavement problems and suggested fixes related to the chapter’s specific preservation treatment
  • References: Lists the references used in the chapter.
  • Media: Contains all the illustrations, photos and animations that appear in the chapter.  Each item links to its location in a chapter. 
  • View CALTRANS Practices:  Enables California-specific information to appear in yellow highlighted text.  Select thefeature again (“toggle”) to remove the California-specific information.
  • Main Menu:  Available from any screen.

To identify your location in the Online Guide

Locate the navigation trail at the top of the screen, below the screen title.  The navigation trail displays the links you selected to reach the current screen.  It looks like this:

Each title in the navigation trail is hot-linked to its related section.  Use the titles like breadcrumbs to follow your “trail” back to your starting point. Select any title to link to that section.

To exit a chapter and return to the Main Menu: 

Select Main Menu at the left of the screen and select another chapter. Another way to select another chapter or subsection is by using the Site Map.

To progress through the screen contents, use the vertical scrollbar at the right of the screen.

If you are having difficulty viewing the entire screen, you may need to add the URL for this site to your Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer. To do this, select Tools > Internet Options from the menu bar in Internet Explorer. Select the Security tab and then select the Trusted Sites icon. Your Internet Options window should now look like this:

Select the Sites... button. Enter the URL you navigated to to begin this course and select Add. Select OK, and then select OK again. Close and reopen Internet Explorer.
